Happy 1st day of spring! In honor of this fabulous day, I thought I would post about an easy DIY recipe for a homemade yoga mat cleaner. If I am being honest, I actually cannot remember the last time I cleaned my mat. If ever. I have done the little wipe down wat the gym but that is pretty much the extent of my cleaning routine.
This recipe just takes a couple minutes and is only a few ingredients. It will not only clean your yoga mat but also give it a refreshing smell. Definitely a must on your Spring Cleaning list!
Homemade Yoga Mat Cleaner
2/3 Witch Hazel (I used the Rose Petal one)
1/3 Distilled Water
10-15 drops essential oil of your choice!
Mix all the ingredients together in a little spray bottle and then spray on mat. Wipe with a rag and let the mat dry out in the sun. You can wipe it down again with a slightly damp rag and then you are good to go!
I used lavender and tea tree oil in my homemade yoga mat cleaner because of their beneficial properties. While lavender is one of my favorite smells, it also is very relaxing and can relief stress (perfect scent on a yoga mat!). Tea tree oil is an antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal so is an obviously great choice for a disinfectant. Witch hazel also has a huge list of qualities to add to being a great disinfectant: antiseptic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal. I found all of my ingredients at Whole Foods but there are many websites that sell essential oils as well.
I hope you enjoy making this cleaner as much as I did. It is also a great gift for any of your fellow yogis!
When was the last time you cleaned your mat? What is your yoga mat cleaning routine?
